remarkably authentic, nowadays i find it highly unlikely this would be done like this, they'd probably dress up the performers more for decency and dumb it down. ah, the good old days when idiots were idiots and did not have to be catered to.

I've just watched the whole series again.....for the fifth or sixth time! This is definitely my favourite TV mini-series and if only a fraction of this history is true ? then Ancient Rome must have been a pretty stressful time and a place to live in :-)

looking back you can see how cheaply it was made but the acting was remarkable...the awards it won were well deserved. I remember it being televised and everybody was talking about it. Thankyou for posting...

@ 56:15 "they say a snake bit her once (Livia) and DIED". Sian Phillips a GREAT female villian with the looks to match. like a live version of Cruella De Ville. she also played the scheming, nasty Reverend Mother Mohiam in Dune.

I AGREE. I taped this back in 1976 on PBS BUT all my video tapes got lost in a move. one of the best acted series of all time. looking forward to the HBO-BBC re-make. IF their smart, they will just re-use this script.

Excellent question, i made a Dream Cast of who I would choose to play the roles, check it out on my channel. The actors/actresses would have to be REALLY GOOD to play these historic characters!

Ancient Roman Empire, certainly an incredible period. My God, do you realize you can spend your entire life studying European history and barely scratch the surface. No wonder they regard us Yanks as upstarts.

I've LOVED "I, Claudius" ever since i watched reruns of the episodes when I was nine years old. it was one of many historically based tv series that drove my passion for Ancient History and the Roman Empire.
